I Think These 12 Markets in Bali Are More than Just Shop Stops

I used to be super obsessed with shopping—like blowing half my savings crazy! It started with purchasing tiny trinkets to get me through the week, but it slowly spiraled into a daily habit! Luckily, my mom stepped in before I hit rock bottom with debt.

And her plan? Genius. She called my tourist cousin to be my shopping buddy. Fun fact: we’re pretty competitive. So every week, we’d hit a Bali market, but she could load up tons of souvenirs and I wasn’t allowed to get anything. Or else, I lose to her!

It took serious willpower, but my competitiveness trumps my shopping urges. And over time, I didn’t want to shop anymore—non-essentials, at least. To stay on track, I made a list of my favorite markets below to decide if I really want to shop or just wander around.

Which markets should I explore in Bali?

There are a bunch of markets you should explore in Bali! Notable must-visits are Badung Market, Sukawati Art Market, Pasar Senggol Gianyar, Kreneng Market, and Kedonganan Fish Market.

Operating Hours:

  • Open 24 hours

Badung Market is a traditional open-air market in Bali that offers groceries, clothing, and souvenirs. During the day, people usually flock inside a 3-floor building to shop. Then in the evening, they go outside for the colorful night market!

Shoppers can find fresh ingredients like fruits, vegetables, meat, and spices. For me, this looks great if you’re planning to cook Balinese cuisine for your family. On top of that, you can get a bunch of antique treasures ideal for home decor and gift-giving.

Pro tip:

Want to level up your retail therapy? I suggest downloading the app Voicemap to get a self-guided audio tour of Badung Market. I reckon this can make your experience come alive with history trivia and stories!

Sukawati Art Market

Website: https://bebekbengil.co.id/en

Address: Jalan Raya Sukawati, Sukawati, Kec. Sukawati, Kabupaten Gianyar

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 6 AM to 6 PM

Sukawati Art Market is a lively Bali marketplace selling clothes, jewelry, as well as affordable locally made mementos.

This place is also divided into 3 buildings—blocks A, B, and C, so be sure to make the most of your trip. Within these spots, you can snag plenty of unique finds, from beach dresses and shirts to paintings and ornaments.

Savvy hack:

I say keep on the lookout for bundle discounts at Sukawati Art Market! And if possible, I recommend practicing your bargaining skills beforehand—you might get up to 50% off if you play your cards right!

Pasar Senggol Gianyar

Address: Jl. Ngurah Rai-Gianyar No.38, Gianyar, Kec. Gianyar, Kabupaten Gianyar

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 3 PM to 10 PM

Not a morning person? Pasar Senggol Gianyar is a popular night market in Bali with stall vendors providing many clothing and keepsake options.

In my view, you shouldn’t skip the Indonesian street food as well! Some vendors specialize in local treats and delicacies, and what better way to embrace the local culture than to try the food?

Nifty trick:

If you’re a tourist, I think it would be easier to shop at Pasar Senggol Gianyar if you have a local guide with you. This can help with the language barrier, negotiating prices, and cultural nuances in the community.

Kreneng Market

Address: 86VF+RX9, Dangin Puri Kangin, Denpasar Utara, Denpasar City

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 4 AM to 3 PM

Those who want to feel like a local should try to shop at Kreneng Market! It’s a busy market offering reasonable prices for clothes, jewelry, and other items. A huge chunk of it is in the open air too, which I feel can give you that authentic vibe.

If you want to save some money, I think you can consider buying some secondhand stuff too! This includes clothes, shoes, electronics, and the like. Just be sure to check if they’re still in good condition!

Insider scoop:

Grabbing a bite at Kreneng Market? I recommend clarifying with the vendor if the nasi or “rice” is already included in the dishes you paid for, like satay or “skewer.”

Otherwise, you might get charged extra for it, which can lead to a misunderstanding.

Kedonganan Fish Market

Address: Jl. Pantai Kedonganan, Kedonganan, Kec. Kuta, Kabupaten Badung

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Friday – 7 AM to 7 PM
  • Saturday – 7 AM to 9 PM
  • Sunday – 7 AM to 8 PM

Who here loves seafood? Kedonganan Fish Market sells tons of fresh fish you might be happy to have for a large grill with the family.

I heard that this is also where many restaurants get their fish, so I bet you can cut expenses in half by cooking your fancy seafood dinner yourself.

If you need help, I say bring your haul to a warung or a casual, local stall and ask them to cook the fish for you! For me, it would be easy to locate them because of the smoke. Most of them can only do charcoal BBQ, which I bet makes everything taste better!

Expert advice:

I recommend wearing waterproof, non-slip closed shoes at Kedonganan Fish Market, as the floors are uneven and can often be wet or dirty.

Prices vary depending on the vendor, so I suggest asking different sellers before committing to buy, especially in bulk.

Ubud Art Market

Address: Jl. Raya Ubud No.35, Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 10 AM to 5 PM

Feeling crafty or just have a lot of free time? Ubud Art Market is where you can wander around to see artsy items and accessories. While some lean on the pricier side, I think many of them are reasonably priced.

Do note that a bunch of stalls here sell the same thing, so you’ll likely have to walk farther to see new items. For this, I believe 2 hours is enough time to explore the market and its surrounding streets.

Smart pointer:

You can expect heavy traffic around Ubud Art Market now and then, so I recommend arranging a drop-off and pick-up taxi beforehand! I reckon this can save you a lot of transport hassle later on.

Pasar Ampera

Address: Uluwatu St No.88-101, Ungasan, South Kuta, Badung Regency

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 5 AM to 8 PM

Pasar Ampera is a farmers’ market in Bali where you can get fresh fruits and veggies, as well as lovely flowers for decor or gifts. Many folks visit early in the morning to get the freshest picks down the hill, and I think you should too!

Also, parking doesn’t seem to be a hassle here since there’s usually a parking guy to help the cars cross safely. If you’re feeling generous, I think paying him Rp 1,000 (roughly USD 0.063) would be a nice gesture.

Eco-friendly advice:

I suggest bringing your own big eco bag to make your shopping experience at Pasar Ampera more planet-friendly and sustainable!

Legian Art Market

Media credit: sapphirelunatravels

Address: Jl. Melasti No.29B Blok B, Legian, Kec. Kuta, Kabupaten Badung

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 8 AM to 9 PM

If your home looks a little dull, I think a trip to Legian Art Market in Bali can inspire you to decorate it! It offers a wide range of art and creative items to get that extra oomph in your space.

In addition, there are plenty of bags and wallets for women, shirts and caps for men, and toys and balloons for kids—something for everyone!

Just a reminder:

Some may say going to Legian Art Market isn’t for the fainthearted. While many vendors are friendly, several can be pushy (and pissed) if you don’t buy anything.

To avoid any conflict, I recommend staying firm and polite before walking away—fast!

Panjer Traditional Market

Media credit: sapphirelunatravels

Address: Jl. Tukad Pakerisan No.6, Panjer, Denpasar Selatan, Kota Denpasar

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 6 AM to 8:30 PM

If you can stand the strong smell of fish and raw meat, you can probably do many things—like thriving at the old-school Panjer Traditional Market! There are many affordable goods here too, so I believe the sacrifice is worth it.

Besides, I appreciate that this market is regularly being cleaned. Moreover, it’s got hand washing facilities, sanitizers, and shopping baskets to make browsing more convenient.

Cheat sheet:

Want to try local delights? Arrive early at Panjer Traditional Market so you won’t miss the tasty pukis cakes! It’s basically a traditional coconut milk cake in Indonesia, made with wheat flour, sugar, eggs, butter, and yeast.

La Brisa Sunday Market

Address: La Brisa Bali, Beach Club, Jl. Pantai Batu Mejan, Canggu, Kec. Kuta Utara, Kabupaten Badung

Contact Details: +62 878 8888 7748

Operating Hours:

  • Sunday – 10 AM to 4 PM
  • Monday to Saturday – Closed

Those who want to maximize their weekend shouldn’t skip La Brisa Sunday Market! It’s located in La Brisa Bali Beach Club, so I bet you’ll also enjoy the cool sea breeze now and then.

For me, this market is ideal for a casual visit—for probably half an hour at most. You’ll see a wonderful mix of local products, handmade goods, and vintage finds. What’s more, you can find a spot to chill and grab some snacks while you’re at it.

Tasty idea:

Each food stall at La Brisa Sunday Market offers something different. I suggest sampling a bit of everything to find new local sweets to swear by!

Wake Bali Art Market

Address: Jl. Kartika Plaza No.9, Kuta, Kec. Kuta, Kabupaten Badung

Contact Details: +62 361 752750

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 8 AM to 5 PM

Wake Bali Art Market is a Bali souvenir store selling clothing, accessories, perfumes, metal objects, and wooden crafts. There are also two big public toilets around here for your convenience.

And if you’re into relaxation, I appreciate that there are various spa products and various massage oils here that would be nice to use at home.

The only challenge for me is some of the items can be expensive, so it’s wise to look around first! Plus, be sure you have enough for a taxi ride home if you’re not driving.

Must-know move:

Remember to count your change before leaving Wake Bali Art Market! A few vendors might intentionally rip you off, so I think it’s best to be safe than sorry.

Windhu Sari Art Market

Media credit: prati_bha.singh

Address: Jl. Buwitan No.4X, Batubulan, Kec. Sukawati, Kabupaten Gianyar

Contact Details: +62 361 295800

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 9 AM to 6 PM

If you don’t feel like shopping under the sun, I reckon Windhu Sari Art Market is the place to be! It’s a well-lit souvenir store providing authentic Balinese items. I love that there’s also air conditioning to cool you down after a long day outside!

As for the goods, you’ll find beautiful kaftan (robe or tunic) dresses, coffee powder, fabrics, bags, festival masks, and more. But unlike other local markets, you’d be unlikely to bargain prices here, just so you know.

Cool thing to note:

If you’re lucky, you might spot a few artists in the middle of making their crafts at Windhu Sari Art Market! I suggest asking a few questions if you’re curious. I recommend supporting local handicrafts as well!
